Intersectional Environmentalist Announces New Executive Director, Airrion Copeland to Lead Organization Into Its Next Chapter
Dec 19, 2024 – Intersectional Environmentalist (IE) proudly announces Airrion (Air) Copeland as its new Executive Director, ushering in an exciting new chapter for the organization.
“I’m thrilled to join IE as the Executive Director. My vision for IE is to transform it into a leading Eco-Media platform focused on art, education, and storytelling to advance climate justice,” said Air Copeland, Executive Director of Intersectional Environmentalist. “Through innovative content and accessible resources, IE will amplify voices and inspire collective action. Eco-Media for Everyone.”
Copeland brings over two decades of leadership experience in nonprofit management, media production, and campaign strategy. His journey into climate justice began with the production of the award-winning documentary White Wash, a groundbreaking exploration of ocean justice and the history of Black surfers. Narrated by Grammy-winning artist Ben Harper and featuring an original score by The Roots, the film spotlighted the intersection of race, environmentalism, and the deeply personal stories of marginalized communities advocating for access to natural spaces.
“My work has always emphasized an intersectional approach–and the climate crisis is one of the most urgent and complex issues of our time,” Copeland continued. “I’m inspired to build on the incredible foundation IE has created, transforming it into an even more inclusive space where educational resources are accessible to all, grassroots voices are amplified, and we work collectively toward a sustainable and equitable future for both people and the planet.”
Intersectional Environmentalist was founded in 2020 in response to the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement. Leah Thomas called for the climate movement to be more inclusive and to address the connection between environmental and social justice. Rooted in Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectional theory, IE has since grown into a global platform with nearly half a million followers across its social media channels. The organization has launched campaigns, created educational toolkits, and more.
“We’re honored to have Air lead IE,” said Leah Thomas, Founder of Intersectional Environmentalist. “Air’s strategic leadership, creative vision, and deep commitment to social justice will ensure that IE continues to empower the next generation of Intersectional Environmentalists, while staying true to the original mission of centering equity in the climate movement.”
"Our vision for shifting the narrative of environmentalism has always been to make sure everyone’s story is reflected—whether that’s in the media, the movement, or the action we take,” said Diandra Marizet Esparza, Director of Impact at Intersectional Environmentalist. “We're confident that Air’s leadership will amplify this goal, making sure the heart of eco-media is intersectional, inclusive, and rooted in collective justice for all."
Prior to joining IE, Copeland served as the Executive Director of The 5 Gyres Institute, where he led groundbreaking initiatives to combat plastic pollution globally, including spearheading policy advocacy campaigns and community-driven solutions to reduce waste at its source. He also serves on the National Board of Directors for the Surfrider Foundation, is a council member for Save the Redwoods League, and works as Executive Producer for Medicinal Media, focusing on impactful storytelling to advance mental health awareness and support for young people.
Under Copeland’s leadership, IE aims to share its updated mission to further its impact and champion climate action that uplifts most impacted communities.
