Key Summary

All those petition signatures, phone calls, and direct action don’t go unnoticed - in fact, the law is on our side. It’s easy to think that contacting your elected officials or signing petitions aren’t impactful, but they really are. When you leave a public comment, your desires go on the record, and when enough constituents advocate for something, elected officials legally should be supporting it. These ‘on the record’ forms of activism are particularly impactful as they can be used in litigation to support climate-friendly policies. Here’s your guide to what really happens when you take action for strong environmental laws and policies.

This toolkit was made in partnership with our friends at Earthjustice, the premier nonprofit public interest environmental law organization wielding the power of law to protect people’s health, preserve magnificent places and wildlife, advance clean energy, and combat climate change.
